A letter from our dad

Not everyone has a dad but wouldn’t it be cool to find a long love letter addressed to you from your father? Even if you didn’t know him, he knew you?Something that not only gushed words of love but gave you instructions on how to live the best life possible? A letter that showed that life and the world and even world events had been all arranged just so you could be born and live. A description of the purpose of your life. The letters end with a promise to return to you and reunite with you.

This letter exists. It exists for each one of us. This letter is the Bible. The Bible is a love letter from our father. Our father is the being who created not just us but every thing that exists including time and space and light and darkness.

Because of misuse and abuse some of us discount or discredit the Bible. We call it many things, we malign it, we return abuse on it, or worse, we ignore it.

I was born into 20th century America and I now live in 21st century America. We are being called a post Christian society. We have forgotten about our fathers love letter to us.

One of my goals in life is to reacquaint my contemporaries, the people I live and work with, the folks and families, those people who my kids and my grandkids will be living and working with after I’m gone, to know about the letter, the love letter that my Father, our father has written to us all.

There a line in the letter that sums up the message succinctly.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

John 3:16-17

God not only proclaims his love for us he has shown it by sending his son Jesus to pay the price that is required by God to reconcile us back to Himself. Why do we need to be reconciled?God does loves us but we have been separated from him by a thing called sin. Sin isn’t just bad things we do, but it’s in our very nature. We can’t get rid of it or do good to appease him for it. We are powerless, but God, being God could sacrifice himself by offering up his one and only son Jesus to die in our place. This one act covered all people for all time. All that is left to do is to accept the gift.

In another place in God’s love letter to us it says this in order to explain how to grab hold of this wonderful offer; “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”’

Romans 10:9-11

I am a man. I am an older man. I am a husband and a dad and a grandpa. I am a disciple of Jesus. Because I am a disciple of Jesus much of what I write is about him, and I usually end what I write with a question, do you the reader know that Jesus loves you? He does. He loves us all but he loves you specifically. He loves me specifically. What will you do with that information today?
